Choose Life: Choosing life means using our personal agency to live life to its fullest potential and valuing ourselves and others on that journey. Choose to dream and choose to make your dreams a reality. Choosing life also means to take accountability for your choices and choose to react positively to life’s “lemons.”
Show Faith: Showing faith is more than a passive belief. Faith is expressed by the way we live. We nurture and strengthen our faith by actively engaging ourselves in good works. Opposite of faith is fear. Fear stunts our growth, while faith, when put into action, results in self-development and self-mastery.
Live Aloha: One of the meanings of the word Aloha is love. Living the spirit of Aloha is living life with a heart so full of love, gratitude, and compassion for your fellowmen (past and present) that your influence can be felt by others, heart to heart, and spirit to spirit.
Kau'i Philosophy
Kau'i means beautiful in Hawaiian.
We believe in the development of beauty inside and out. Inside, referring to the beauty of our character, who we are, and our potential best self of whom we can work to become. Out, meaning taking care of our physical well-being. We portray that beauty by exercising our mind and bodies through Polynesian dancing and beautifying our character by living the Aloha Spirit.
The spirit of Aloha is having an overflowing compassion, gratitude and love toward our fellowman and the creations of earth, and treating them as you would like to be treated, if not better.
Kau’i lives the Aloha Spirit by establishing a focus on these 3 pillars, which are:
1. Service Mindset
2. Can-do Attitude
3. Caring Heart
Our Kau'i Roots
Why the name Kau'i?
Kau'i is the middle name of my late father, John Kau'i Kon Yee Kapeliela. His name, Kau’i, means beautiful, handsome; of a very high standard. He truly lived up to his name. He was a beautiful person who honored his Hawaiian heritage by living a life full of the Aloha Spirit.
John was a prodigy at all games and sports. Gladly, he made personal sacrifices for his family, friends, and those who’s paths he crossed. He opened his home to all people from foreign exchange students visiting our country to people down on their luck and living on the street. His home was a place where anyone could take shelter, be nourished, and gain a foothold to become self-reliant. He saw the beauty in everyone and he had the ability to uplift those with whom he interacted to share the Aloha Spirit.
Kau’i stands to preserve my father’s beautiful legacy of living the Aloha Spirit wherever you are and to provide an accepting community for ALL people.
Whether or not you are from the islands, we invite you to join us in learning Polynesian culture through the beautiful art of HULA, and together, continue to spread the Aloha Spirit exemplified by my father.
